Adidas Adilette
The Adilette started as locker-room footwear: created in the early 1970s at the request of athletes who wanted something for the shower and the edge of the pool. That explains everything notable about it. There’s nothing on it that can be ruined by water, nothing to fasten, and it dries faster than your towel.
One strap, and otherwise just the footbed
The construction hasn’t changed in fifty years: a molded footbed with a wide strap across the instep, and that’s the whole shoe. On the classic versions the three stripes run across that strap and the brand name is pressed into the side of the footbed. There are no seams that can come undone and no stitching to trap water, because everything is molded from one or two pieces.
The family beneath it
Under this name there are now clearly several different slippers. The Aqua and the Shower are the lightest and cheapest, made in one piece and closest to the original. The Comfort places a softer, springy footbed in the same shape. The Adifom is the thick foam version, and the Estrap adds an extra strap. They share the concept, not the feel: anyone expecting the hard locker-room classic and ordering a Comfort will get a substantially softer slipper.
The 22 is the outlier
The Adilette 22 shows how far the shape can be stretched. The entire surface is ribbed like the contour lines of a map, and the stripes have disappeared. Instead a full sentence appears on the side: the brand name in text, on the only Adilette without stripes. It’s the same single strap and the same molded footbed, but executed as a sculpture.
What it sits next to
In the same aisle are the Crocs Classic, which with its closed toe took a different turn, and the Birkenstock Arizona, which with cork and two buckles is precisely the opposite of molded simplicity. Of the three, the Adilette is the simplest, and that has been exactly the intention since the locker room.
