Nike Zoom

Zoom is not a shoe but a promise: cushioning you can hardly see and all the more strongly feel. Nike introduced Zoom Air in 1995 as a thin air pouch with tightly stretched fibers inside. Press the unit in, and those fibers pull it back into shape immediately, and that very springy moment makes the difference with the thick Air chambers from the same years. Low to the ground, quick to return, ready for the next step.

Over the years the name has become an umbrella term, and that makes the selection on this page so broad. There’s basketball underneath, with the Nike Zoom Freak from Giannis Antetokounmpo and the signatures of KD and LeBron. There’s running, from the Nike Zoom Pegasus to the Nike Zoom Fly with its racer silhouette. And there’s skating, because the SB versions of the Janoski and the Nike Zoom Blazer also carry the label.

Those who pay close attention to the details can see how literally Nike sometimes takes the technology. The Zoom Double Stacked stacks two visible Zoom pockets on top of each other in open windows under the heel and forefoot, with the type designation simply printed on the units. The Nike Zoom 2K celebrates the turn of the millennium with the numerals of the year on the lace straps and a Zm Air badge on the heel. And on the Zoom Fly the structure shows through a translucent upper.

One pitfall deserves explanation. Zoom nowadays covers two technologies: the classic Zoom Air unit with fibers, and ZoomX, an extremely light foam without air that gives the Zoom Fly and the Pegasus Turbo their marathon DNA. The same family name, a fundamentally different feel underfoot.
