Puma Suede
Making a basketball shoe from the softest material in the closet is not an obvious choice. Yet that’s what happened here in the late sixties, and the model is still named for it. Suede gives grip in the hand, feels warm and takes the shape of your foot. It also has a property you’d rather not have on a sports floor: it scuffs at the first touch.
Nothing around it
Look at the toe of a pair worn for a week and you’ll already see the creases. That’s because there’s no toe cap over it, no rubber edge, no reinforcement of any kind. The upper is built almost entirely from a single soft material, with a padded collar as the only addition. Where other shoes from that era covered their wear spots, this one leaves them exposed.
That very vulnerability became the point
When the model was picked up outside of sport in New York in the seventies and eighties, a clean pair was worth something for that reason. A suede toe without creases meant you treated it carefully. A shoe that can’t take neglect turns maintenance into a statement, and that’s a reputation this model never lost. Soft hide, tough beast.
The stripe plays a part
The curved band on the side is a separately cut piece of suede that runs up and forward from the sole edge. Along its upper edge there’s a row of perforations in the rear panel. Above the band the model name is stamped into the material on every version, whether that stamp contrasts or is blended into the same shade. At the bottom is a thin cupsole with fine vertical ribbing along the side, and the eyelets are plain punched holes without metal rings.
