About

Nike Roshe

The Roshe proves a global hit can come from leaving things out. Designer Dylan Raasch drew the model in 2012 from a Zen idea: a single layer of mesh, a simple foam sole with a wavy profile, and nothing else. Even the name comes from that origin: a variation on roshi, the title for a Zen master, spelled slightly differently out of respect. The shoe was meant to be affordable, wearable with or without socks, and above all not call attention to itself.

The formula took off like few others. The Nike Roshe Run grew into a common sight on the streets between 2012 and 2015, after which Nike shortened the name: because it was never a true running shoe, the model continued as the Nike Roshe One. The Nike Roshe Two later added a thicker, layered sole for those who wanted more cushioning, and Flyknit versions extended the upper into a sock.

The simplicity also made the Roshe a useful building block. Nike slid the soft sole under retro silhouettes like the LD-1000 and the Waffle Racer, and those hybrids became collectible: the LD-1000 created with Japanese Fragment Design is considered one of the most sought-after releases within the family. For winter there was even a Sneakerboot version with a high shaft.

Anyone looking for a pair today will notice the supply is smaller than in the heyday: Nike scaled the line down, which made the remaining releases more coveted. The silhouette itself is now both a time capsule and a classic, the shoe with which half of the Netherlands bought their first Nike in the early 2010s.
