About New Balance 9060
New Balance 9060
Look for one straight line on this shoe and you won’t find one. Every panel, every seam and every edge of the sole waves. That’s the whole idea behind the 9060: parts from the brand’s older running models have been taken, enlarged and then bent.
The protruding block at the heel
The most striking part is at the back and literally sticks out. Above the sole there’s a separate block that juts out from the heel, like a plank slid out. On the older models it comes from, a similar element was integrated flush with the sole; here it has been pulled away and enlarged into something you can see from a meter away. It’s the quickest feature to recognize the 9060.
The sole is made of separate pods
The lower edge of the midsole doesn’t run flat but is cut into rounded segments, making the sole look from the side like a series of pushed-together cushions. Above that are two to three layers of foam in different shades layered on top of each other, so you can read the sole’s construction from the side. It’s a sole that shows itself, whereas older models concealed it.
The N is out of proportion
The letter on the flank is larger than on any other model from the brand and has a double outline. Around it sits an upper of suede with open mesh in the places that need to breathe, with all panel edges cut in arches. Where the 574 keeps its surfaces straight and calm, this model does precisely the opposite.
Where it fits
The 9060 is not a running shoe that became popular by accident, but a model intended for the street from the drawing board. It stomps rather than walks, and that’s intentional. Those looking for calmer predecessors should look at the 990 or the 2002R; the 1906 is closest in design language, with the same preference for visible technology but in a slimmer package.
