Asics Gel-NYC
The Gel-NYC is not a reissue, which makes it an odd one out in the archive era. Asics built this shoe by taking apart existing models from its early-2000s catalog and recombining the parts: the upper leans on the era’s top models, the sole on another. The result never existed before, though each component did.
The sole ripples in layers
The most recognizable part sits underneath. The midsole is not a smooth wedge but a sculpted stacking whose edges ripple like piled cushions, with crosswise ribbing and gel accents visible between the layers. From the side the sole seems to move while the shoe stands still. As if it’s catching its breath. Above that the familiar bands cross the side panel, like applied strips that hold the mesh beneath in place.
Suede where the city meets the shoe
A wide suede rim runs over the toe and continues as a mudguard to the sides, and the heel also carries suede panels. The base beneath is open mesh with glossy panels between, in the layered construction style of the early 2000s. The name on the tongue and heel makes the destination explicit: this is a city shoe, not a road runner, and the materials were chosen accordingly.
The techrunner lineup
The Gel-NYC belongs to the lineup of complex early-2000s runners that have reclaimed the streets in recent years, alongside the Nike Zoom Vomero and the New Balance 9060. All three wear their technology as ornamentation; the difference is that those two revive or remodel existing models, while this one is newly assembled from parts. Within the brand the Gel-1130 is the restrained little brother and the Gel-Kayano 14 the true archive piece this all refers to.
