The number tells you where this shoe comes from. Asics numbered its running shoes by the line they fell into, and the thousand series was the mid tier: solid road shoes without the pricier tech of the Gel-Kayano. That modest origin is exactly why the 1130 looks so good now, because nobody ever tried to make it impressive.
The stripes are scaffolding
Look at the side and follow the crossed bands. They start as the familiar brand mark, but they do not stop there: they run on into a plastic framework laid across the whole midfoot, tying the lace holes to the sole edge. The mesh underneath is open and slack; the framework over it holds things in shape and spreads the lace tension. The same principle as the ribs on a very different model from 1998, but here calm and silver-gray.
The sole is discolored from the factory
The midsole is not white but off-white, as if the shoe had sat in a closet for a few years. That is a deliberate choice in the reissue: the new pair gets the tint the original only earned after years. The gel sits worked into the foam in the heel, without a big window; what you see from outside is a small translucent accent, not the tech itself.
Why this model in particular stuck
The flagships of that day are back too, but the mid-tier model has a head start: it is simpler in build, sat at a lower price, and so was worn more widely.
