Nike Air Max 200: the number is a percentage
With Air Max the number usually stands for a year. The 90, the 95, the 97: all the years they first appeared. The Air Max 200 breaks that habit. The number refers to the air chamber, which contains 200 percent more air than the visible units that came before it. If you read 200 as 2000 for the production year, you’re almost twenty years off, since this model was released in 2019.
That you can see that air is the whole point. Look through the heel and there are three round pillars in the chamber, like supports in a tunnel. With most visible Air units you look through an empty bubble; here there’s something inside. In brightly colored colorways that detail immediately stands out, because the pillars are lighter than the surrounding rubber.
The upper tells the same story in another language. The panels wind in rounded loops over the mesh, without a single straight line. Nike borrowed those shapes from flowing energy in nature, from lava and waves, and that’s exactly what you see: no surface stays still. At the back there’s a pull tab to put the shoe on and the Swoosh lies small and flat on the flank, leaving the sole to do the work.
The 200 is not a reissue, but it does look back. Nike released it as a tribute to the Air Max 180, the model that extended the air chamber to the sole edge in 1991. If you want more height under the heel, look to the Air Max 270; if you want the real years, to the Air Max 90 and the Air Max 95.
