Crocs Classic

The Crocs Classic started in 2002 as a boat shoe, and once you know that the whole shoe suddenly makes sense. The holes are there to let water drain, the material floats, the sole grips on a wet deck, and the heel strap keeps it on when it rocks. That twenty years later people mostly wear it on the street and in the garden doesn’t change that logic.

The heel strap swivels, and that’s the secret

The band behind the heel is fastened with two round rivets and can therefore hinge. Folded back it secures the shoe to the foot; folded forward over the instep it becomes a slip-on. Those two positions have even picked up names in common speech, and the swiveling strap is the part that identifies a real one: the little crocodile is on the rivet button.

Count the holes

There are thirteen holes on the top of the toe, and along the side runs a row of larger openings at the waterline. On top they’re for ventilation and, since the world discovered them, for the clip-on charms used to decorate the shoe. On the side they’re the drainage: step into a puddle and the water runs out again at the side. It’s the only shoe on this site where the holes are the product.

One mold, one material

The whole clog comes from a single mold and is made from the brand’s own foam resin, which is light, floats and conforms to heat: after an hour of wearing the impression of your foot is in it. There is no seam, no glue and no textile on the basic version, and therefore it can go under the tap or even into a bucket of soapy water without anything coming loose. The collar has a knobbly textured strap, the sole coarse blocks.

The family and the neighbors

Under this name are also the Lined, with a fixed lining for winter, and the All-Terrain, with a coarser sole and an adjustable strap. The concept remains the same.
