Asics Gel Quantum: the number tells you how much cushioning you get

The Gel Quantum is the youngest branch of the Asics family, and the only one without a running background. The line began in 2015 with the Gel-Quantum 360 I — according to Asics the brand’s first shoe with gel that runs 360 degrees around the midsole. Where other Asics names come from the race archive, the Quantum was built from day one to showcase cushioning.

The naming system is a guide, and you’ll need it on this page. The first number indicates how much gel you get: 360 means visible cushioning all the way around the perimeter, 180 concentrates the cushioning under the heel and midfoot, and 90 is the entry-level version with the smallest amount. The second number is simply the generation — and Asics alternates between Roman and Arabic numerals, so a 360 VII and a 360 6 are consecutive model years of the same shoe.

Pick up a model and you can see where the money went: the sole wall is a series of wavy, glossy chambers, like a line of dunes under the foot, while the upper stays restrained — smooth mesh with a glossy stripe appliqué. Besides the main numbers there are offshoots: an Infinity version that extends the all-around idea, a Lyte version, trail versions with TRL in the name, and kids’ sizes of the 90.

Don’t be mistaken about this line’s role: the technology comes from the running world, but the Quantum is a comfort-and-style model for the city.
