About Asics Gel-1130 Mule

The retro runner with the heel removed

The Asics Gel-1130 Mule is exactly what the name says: the Gel-1130 retro runner, but converted into a mule with an open heel. The front is that of the well-known Y2K running shoe, with a mesh upper, the metallic Asics stripes, the laces and the wavy, cushioned sole. At the back the heel has been removed, so you can slip in and out without fuss. It is a tech runner and a slip-on at the same time.

Gel and Trusstic stay under the foot

What makes the Gel-1130 Mule special is that it retains the running technology of the original. There’s still Rearfoot GEL under the heel for cushioning, and the TRUSSTIC support system that runners from the late 2000s knew is carried over as well. The mesh upper with its underlays keeps the foot airy. That way you get the retro-runner look with real Asics tech, in a shoe you slip on like a slipper.

From the Gel-1000 line

The Gel-1130 is the ninth step in Asics’ Gel-1000 series, a long line of affordable, cushioned running shoes. The Mule version takes that silhouette out of the running lane and presents it as a lifestyle slip-on, in the same realm as the SportStyle runners like the Gel-NYC. It’s retro running, translated into convenience.

Runner at the front, mule at the back

The Gel-1130 Mule is meant to be worn, not to be run in. The open heel makes it a slip-on for home and the city, while the closed, laced front gives it the appearance of a real sports shoe. It is that duality, half runner, half mule, that gives the model its own place.

What differs by version

The runner front, the open heel, the Gel cushioning and the Trusstic system remain the same across versions. What varies is the colour and material distribution of the upper, from black-silver to lighter, warmer tones. Put two versions side by side and the shoe is the same; the detailing changes.
