Adidas Tokyo
The Tokyo is a trail runner from the archive of adidas, and its name refers to the city where the brand marketed its running shoes in the 1970s. The silhouette comes from an era when a running shoe was still made of suede and nylon, sat low to the ground, and derived its support from panels rather than technology.
The design is simple and crisply drawn. The three stripes lie like wide bands across the side, with a curved panel behind them that continues into the heel. The model name is printed in a small block on the heel, and the sole edge runs in a thin, slightly protruding line around the shoe, with a rubber sole that rises over the toe. Some versions bear a gold-coloured brand logo on the heel.
The reissue fits into the broader return of the terrain runner as a street shoe. Where sneaker fans used to look to basketball, the silhouettes now come from the running corner of four decades ago: low, narrow, and without noticeable cushioning. Within that same niche, the Adidas Gazelle and the Adidas SL 72 serve the same taste.
One warning when searching: weightlifting shoes with Tokyo in the title also appear under this name, recognizable by the flat sole and the wide strap across the instep. Those belong to a completely different sport and are not intended for everyday wear.
