Adidas Japan: gold foil from the era when shoes were named after countries
There was a time when adidas named its shoes after cities and countries, and the Japan is of that lineage. The silhouette dates from the era of early training shoes and remained a model beloved by enthusiasts for decades, until designer Grace Wales Bonner brought it back into her adidas collections around 2020 and the rest of the world suddenly remembered the shoe. The regular versions on this page are the legacy of that rediscovery.
The shoe itself is a study in flatness and refinement. Smooth leather with suede in precisely two places, the toe and the heel panel, and between them rows of fine perforations in the forefoot. On the flank there is no emblem but a signature: adidas JAPAN printed in gold foil, like a book cover. The sole is a thin layer of gum with a fine tread, the tongue remains paper-thin. Compared with the Samba, what stands out is what’s missing, because like the Handball Spezial the Japan has no rubber toe cap. Adidas rarely made them slimmer than this.
Read the titles carefully, because about one in ten results is called Country Japan. That is another archive silhouette (the Country, with its rounded toe and running roots) in a Japan iteration, not a member of this model. And if Wales Bonner herself appears in a title, you’re looking at the more expensive designer branch of the same story.
In the flat-shoe wave that the Taekwondo brought to the floor, the Japan is the aristocrat: equally flat, but with gold on the flank. Interest has steadily risen here since the rediscovery, without ever shouting. That suits a shoe that carries its name in foil.
