The Rowley is the signature model of Geoff Rowley, the British skater who signed with Vans in the 1990s and received a shoe that is still produced today. It is one of the few skate shoes named after a person rather than a silhouette, and the model is considered one of the most reliable choices in skating.
The construction is purely functional. The suede on the side is thicker than on the regular models, with double contrast stitching along the seams so they won’t be the first to fail. The characteristic side stripe is made in the same suede instead of as a separate panel, which makes it less vulnerable to abrasion. Under the shoe is a vulcanized sole with the waffle tread the brand has used since its early days.
That vulcanization is deliberate: the rubber is bonded to the upper under heat instead of being glued beneath it, which creates a thin, flexible connection and therefore a lot of board feel.
Within the brand’s lineup the Vans Style and the Vans Knu Skool serve the broader line; at other brands the Nike SB Chron 2 represents the same entry point into skating.
