The Motiva is not a running shoe but a walking shoe, and that is a notable change of direction for Nike. For decades the brand built everything around running, jumping and scoring; with this model it is for the first time explicitly targeting people who simply take a lot of steps. The starting point is the smooth roll of a walking stride, not the impact of a running step.
The sole shows that immediately. Instead of a flat edge, a wavy profile runs around the whole shoe, with deep cutouts that let the sole flex to the rhythm of the foot. The sole rises at the front and back, so you naturally roll from heel to toe. Above that sits a knitted upper with a double lace loop on the instep and a pull loop on the heel; the brand mark is large on the heel rim, finished in metallic.
The timing fits a broader shift. Walking as a form of exercise has grown strongly, and where brands like Skechers have served that market for years, Nike has joined with the Motiva. The model is also widely worn by people with jobs that require standing.
