The Gato started as an indoor soccer shoe and became a skate shoe, and that dual origin explains everything about the model. Nike released it for indoor soccer, where a flat rubber sole and a thin upper are meant to give ball feel. Skaters discovered the exact same qualities: low to the ground, flat, and with a sole that grips the board.
The takeover became official when the brand’s SB division adopted and adapted the model. The indoor version received extra cushioning in the insole, a sturdier upper and reinforcements where a board’s grip tape wears the most. The swoosh remained a large design element on the side, with a smooth-leather toe and a gum sole that rises up over the toe.
The best-known release came from Supreme, which in 2018 put out a version with its name on the side and the red box on the upper. That turned an unassuming indoor shoe into a collectible, and it’s the reason the model became known outside the skate world.
Within the brand’s range, the Nike Blazer line and the Nike Field General cater to the same demand for low, flat silhouettes with a sporting past.
