Nike Field General

The Field General comes from a sport that is hardly played in Europe and that’s exactly why it’s such an odd street shoe. It originally is an American football shoe from the 1980s, designed for use on artificial turf, with a name that in that sport is the nickname of the quarterback: the man who directs the game.

You can tell its origin in every detail. The sole is flat and smoothly profiled with small studs, made for artificial turf rather than for asphalt or parquet. The upper combines nylon with suede panels on the toe and the sides, precisely where a foot scuffs on the field. The swoosh runs large and wide along the side, and a small tab on the heel sticks up with the brand on it.

That the model is surfacing now fits with the return of simple field shoes in fashion. Where sneaker enthusiasts previously looked to basketball and running, silhouettes now come from corners like soccer, baseball and American football: low, flat and without cushioning. Within that same vein the Nike Waffle Debut covers the running side and the Nike C1TY has translated the field shoe to the city.
