Nike Blazer Mid

When people say Blazer today, they usually mean this one. The Mid is the version that carried the model’s revival, and almost always in the 77 guise: the reissue that harks back to the late-seventies shape. The collar stops at the ankle bone

The difference with the high Blazer is two centimetres. The Mid collar ends exactly at the ankle bone instead of above it, and that changes the character completely: the shoe still looks like a basketball model but walks like a low. In all three versions shown the collar sits at the exact same height, with a small padded rim that keeps the ankle bone free.

The heel tab bears the word vertically

At the back there’s a separate tab that sticks up above the heel, and the brand name is stacked top to bottom on it, one letter per line. It’s the detail by which you recognise a Mid from behind, and the contrast with the main page is neat: there the word is spelled out horizontally across the heel, here vertically on a tab above it. The suede panel over the toe, with its jagged lower edge, is carried over from the original.

What 77 and VNTG mean

The 77 tag marks the year the version is modelled on; VNTG goes a step further and gives the sole edge and the leather an aged finish, as if the pair had been stored for decades. Both are versions of the same shoe. Under this label there are also editions with prints and special panels, but the construction always remains that of the Mid 77.

The mid-height neighbours

In the mid-height section the Blazer Mid stands opposite the Air Jordan 1 Mid — fuller, with cushioning — and the Chuck Taylor Hi, which in canvas offers the same silhouette. Of the three, the Mid is the thinnest and the flattest, and that is precisely its appeal: a lot of silhouette, not much shoe. The low version is listed separately on Blazer Low.
