Tensioned fibers instead of an air bubble

A Zoom Air unit contains tightly stretched fibers between the top and bottom of a flat air chamber. Put weight on it and those fibers bend and compress the chamber; release, and they pull the chamber taut again. That happens faster than in a regular air chamber, and that’s precisely the point: this is cushioning that pushes back rather than just absorbs.

Why you usually don’t see it

Unlike the Air Max range, where the chamber is deliberately exposed, a Zoom unit is almost always hidden in the sole. It is thin and flat, and that’s where the benefit lies: you stay close to the ground and feel what’s happening beneath you. Visibility wouldn’t add anything to that.
