Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38: the generation that changed only the upper
The Pegasus appears every year, and usually the update concerns the sole. Not with the 38. Under the foot this shoe is identical to the Pegasus 37: the same full layer of React foam, the same Zoom Air unit in the forefoot. Everything that changed is in the upper.
And that is exactly where the 37’s complaints came from. It had a shallow heel cup that left runners with blisters, and a toe box many wearers found too tight. The 38 therefore sits on a new last, with more width and more height in the toe box, and with a heel cup that wraps higher around the foot. Anyone who places the two side by side will see that difference reflected in the white heel panel that on the 38 clearly runs higher.
The third difference only becomes apparent if you look at the laces. They don’t run through holes in the material but through separate, individually woven loops along the instep, often in a contrasting color. Beneath them lies a padded tongue. These are small interventions, but together they determine how the shoe fits the foot, and that was the whole project for this generation.
On the flank the swoosh runs far back and tapers there to a point. AIR ZOOM is printed on the midsole at the forefoot, directly above where the unit sits.
