About Nike Air VaporMax 2021

Walking on air, with a recycled edge

The Nike Air VaporMax 2021 continues the line’s most famous feature: you walk directly on air. Underfoot there is no foam but a full, transparent VaporMax Air sole with visible chambers that compress with every step. Above that sits a Flyknit upper, a knitted sock with a waffle texture and an integrated lacing system. It’s the 2021 generation, recognizable by that clean knit and the speckles of recycled material in it.

The sole is the whole idea

On the VaporMax, the Air unit replaces the classic midsole entirely. So there’s nothing between your foot and the air except the chambers themselves, which gives the shoe its soft, springy feel and its unmistakable transparent underside. The 2021 refines that unit and makes it partly from recycled materials, as part of Nike’s sustainability line.

Which VaporMax is this?

The VaporMax has many generations, mainly differing in the upper. This is the VaporMax from 2021, with a cleaner, more pared-back Flyknit than in previous years. It’s a different route than the VaporMax Plus, which puts the Air Max Plus upper on the VaporMax sole. If you’re looking for the stripped-down, knitted 2021, this page is the right place.

Light and recycled

The combination of a knitted upper and a sole that consists only of Air makes the VaporMax 2021 light. Nike used a significant share of recycled material for this version, which you can see in the speckled knit. It’s a shoe that aims to be technical and sustainable at the same time, without giving up the recognizable VaporMax look.

What differs by version

The transparent Air sole and the Flyknit construction remain the same across versions. What changes is the finish of the knit and how the recycled speckles show through. Place two versions side by side and the shoe is the same; only the upper changes in tone.
