About Nike Air Huarache Run
Nike Air Huarache Run
In 1991 Nike asked a question nobody had ever asked before: have you hugged your foot today? The shoe behind that slogan was Tinker Hatfield’s Air Huarache, inspired by waterski boots and the Mexican huarache sandal. His idea: strip away everything a shoe doesn’t need, and let a neoprene inner sock do the work. There wasn’t even a swoosh on the side, which in 1991 was almost sacrilege.
Nike itself initially believed so little in it that the model nearly didn’t go into production. An employee took a load of pairs to the New York Marathon on his own and sold them straight out of the boxes; the success of that weekend got the shoe into the range after all. Thirty years later that same stubbornness is considered the model’s character.
The identifying features are all around the heel. A plastic exoskeleton cage grips the rearfoot like a claw, with a cluster of holes in the strap and the brand name printed on it. The midsole carries a field of raised nubs at the heel, and inside the neoprene sock holds the foot, so the rest of the upper is mostly decoration. The Ultra version strips the design even further, with an elastic heel strap instead of the cage, and the DNA editions mix elements from the model’s entire family history.
The model enjoyed a revival around 2014, when the silhouette broke through again in Europe as a lifestyle icon. If you want to see more from the same designer: the Nike Air Max 1 is Tinker Hatfield’s other revolution, with exactly the opposite philosophy — where the Air Max shows its technology, the Huarache hides everything beneath the skin.
