About Nike Air Foamposite
Nike Air Foamposite: the shoe that comes out of a mold
Almost every sneaker is stitched; the Foamposite is cast. For this 1997 model designer Eric Avar poured liquid polyurethane into a mold so the upper came out as a single seamless shell — a production experiment that has rarely been copied since. The shoe became Penny Hardaway’s signature model and looked like nothing else on the court, which was the point.
The shell tells its own story. The ribs fall like curtain folds over the flank, a woven block of carbon fiber sits exposed in the cavity under the instep — the plate that gives the cast shell its stiffness — and the translucent outsole carries round nubs. There are two pull loops, on heel and tongue, because you don’t just pull a shell on. Those details are found on almost every version, whatever print lies over it.
The family has two main members and they’re mixed together here. The Foamposite One wears a small Swoosh by the laces; the Foamposite Pro moves the branding to a large Swoosh on the heel panel. Otherwise the shell is largely the same — the name tells you which one you’ve got. Occasionally the Total Air Foamposite Max appears as well, the heavier version Tim Duncan played in.
The Foamposite’s cult status is notably place-specific: in and around Washington D.C. the shoe grew into a street uniform, and each new release there keeps its own audience. If you want to taste the era this glossy construction comes from, look at the Air Jordan 11 — patent leather and carbon from the same years — and if you want to see where Eric Avar went next, you’ll find his hand in the Kobe line.
