New Balance 725: the nineties without the bombast
Among the revived New Balance models from around the turn of the century, the 725 is a bit more restrained. It has the layered panels and curved lines typical of that era, but without the metallic flourishes of the 1906 or the volume of the 9060. It’s the version for someone who likes the silhouette but prefers not to stand out.
The details are in the construction. Suede and mesh alternate in narrow, curved panels that overlap like scales, with the N in a bordered panel on the side. 725 is printed on the heel panel, and the midsole runs in a long, flowing line to the rear with a gum-colored outsole beneath. No window in the heel, no cushioning name on the midsole wall.
The latter says a lot about where this model sits. Where the top range advertises its technology outright with ABZORB or ENCAP in the rubber, the 725 sticks to a plain construction. Here you buy the shape of the era, not its technology.
