The Moab is one of the best-selling hiking shoes in the world, and its name is a play on words that sums up the whole design: Mother Of All Boots. Merrell built it as the shoe you put on without thinking, with enough grip and support for the trail and enough comfort to walk in right away. That last point is key: where hiking shoes were notorious for their break-in period, the brand wanted one that fits out of the box.
The construction is functional down to the details. The upper combines suede with mesh panels for ventilation, and a rubber toe rand runs over the toe to protect against rocks. The eyelets are set in loose loops so lace tension spreads across the instep, and there’s a sturdy pull tab at the heel. Underfoot sits a lugged sole from the Italian rubber maker Vibram, whose name is printed on the sole edge.
