The Moab 3 is the third generation of one of the best-selling hiking shoes in the world, and the changes are exactly what you’d expect from such a model: small, considered, and without altering the shape. Merrell changed mainly what you don’t see, while the silhouette that made the model successful remained intact.
The construction stays functional down to the details. The upper combines suede with mesh panels for ventilation, with a rubber toe bumper that protects against rocks. The eyelets sit in individual loops that distribute tension across the instep, and there’s a sturdy pull tab at the back. Underfoot is a lugged sole from Italian rubber manufacturer Vibram, whose name is printed on the edge of the sole.
The third generation received an adjusted insole and a revised cushioning unit, plus a larger share of recycled material in the upper. The premise remained unchanged: a shoe you can wear all day without breaking in.
