About Karhu Legacy 96
Karhu Legacy 96
Karhu is Finland’s oldest sports brand, founded in 1916, and it has one anecdote every sneaker fan knows: in 1952 the company sold its three stripes to adidas, for an amount paid in bottles of whisky. What remained of the brand was the bear—karhu is the Finnish word for it—and that logo has appeared on every shoe since.
The Legacy 96 comes from the brand’s running tradition. The upper stacks suede and mesh in different textures, with the bear logo as a curved form across the side and the brand name stitched on the mid-panel. The midsole has the cushioning system designation printed on it, and the outsole features a tread designed to resemble a forest floor, with a gum edge that rises over the toe.
That the brand gained cult status in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe is down to exactly that combination: a small brand with a real history, shoes you don’t see everywhere, and collaborations with stores that bring their own audiences. In the same vein, the Asics Gel Lyte and the New Balance classics deliver the layered running silhouette from larger brands.
