About Ecco Biom

Ecco Biom

Biom is ECCO’s sport line, from the Danish shoe brand best known for its leather comfort shoes. The name stands for Biomechanical Optimization: the principle that the sole follows the natural position of the foot rather than correcting it, with a last closer to the shape of the bare foot than usual.

The current generation carries the designation 2.2 and demonstrates the approach well. Over a mesh base lies a grid of ripstop in a contrasting color, running as a single continuous panel from toe to heel. The lacing runs through a toggle closure instead of being tied, the heel has a pull loop for putting the shoe on, and the midsole rises along the side in a thick, slightly raised rim. The line’s name is printed on that rim.

ECCO tans its own leather and makes its own soles, which allows the brand to directly inject the sole onto the upper. You can see this at the junction: there is no visible seam or glue line between sole and upper, as is the case with most sneakers.

Within the line there are versions for road, for trail and for everyday use, ranging from low and lightweight to versions with a waterproof membrane. The slightly smarter, fully leather alternative from the brand is on the page of the Ecco Soft 7; for the trail see the Merrell Nova.
