A couture house making a dad shoe: that still felt provocative in 2019. The B22 appeared under Kim Jones, who as artistic director of the men’s line brought streetwear and haute couture together, and the model immediately became the face of that collision. Chunky, technical, and yet hand-finished in Italy.

Mesh in the leading role, leather as linework

The base is coarse, open mesh — you can literally see through it. Over that lie panels of smooth calf leather in flowing, curved shapes, as if painted on with a broad brush. The toe is finished in suede, the side panel is perforated, and the laces are round with metal eyelets. It’s a striking amount of material mixing for a single shoe, and that’s exactly what makes it recognizable from a distance.

The detail it comes down to

Look at the midsole. There is a chrome-coloured insert with an oval plaque stamped DIOR — not a stitched logo but a piece of jewelry integrated into the construction. It’s the kind of detail that shows a fashion house treats a sneaker as a wearable object. The sole itself is substantial and layered, with a wide base that makes the silhouette heavy and confident.

Why it endured

Many designer sneakers from that wave are now dated. The B22 endured because it doesn’t try to imitate a running shoe: it uses the runner shape as a carrier for materials and finishing. Within the B line this is the technical member — where other models in that range stay closer to leather classics, the B22 deliberately opts for mesh and volume.
