The Wallabee is technically not even a sneaker, and yet it has sat among collectors’ sneakers for decades. Clarks released the model in 1967 as a moccasin: a single piece of leather that folds around the foot like an envelope, with the distinctive thick stitching around the toe as visible proof. The name refers to the wallaby, the small kangaroo-like marsupial, because the foot sits in the shoe like a joey in a pouch.
Beneath that upper sits the second trademark: a crepe sole, rough natural rubber that feels soft underfoot, slightly tacky to the touch and that builds its own patina over the years. The construction otherwise consists of only two lace eyelets per side, often finishing with leather tabs. The low version early on gained company from the Wallabee Boot, which reaches up to the ankle with a higher shaft but is otherwise built identically.
The shoe owes its second life to two unlikely worlds. In Jamaica it became the status symbol of rudeboy culture in the 1970s, and via the Caribbean community in New York it made its way into hip hop. Especially the Wu-Tang Clan fully adopted the Wallabee: Ghostface Killah called himself the Wallabee Champ and the group released their own versions through Wu Wear, which also appear in the selection on this page.
Modern collabs confirm that status. BAPE produced versions in its camouflage patterns, Neighborhood made a Gore-Tex variant, and Aimé Leon Dore covered the upper in thick Italian Casentino wool, complete with gold foil print on the lace tabs. For those seeking the rugged opposite: the work boots of the Timberland Inch series represent the other extreme of the same boots-meet-streetwear movement.
