Birkenstock Tokio

The Tokio is the closed variant within Birkenstock’s range: a clog with a closed toe and an ankle strap, whereas the brand is mainly known for open sandals. The model was originally made for work environments, in kitchens and care facilities where a closed toe is required, and later grew into an everyday shoe.

The construction is that of the entire brand. Under the foot lies the cork-latex footbed that molds to the foot through body heat and weight, with the characteristic elevation under the arch and a raised rim around the toes. At the heel there is an adjustable strap with a buckle that you can fold forward so the shoe can be worn as a slip-on. The sole edge shows the cork layer as a separate band on the side, and the brand name is stamped on the buckle.

The difference with the better-known models is only in the upper: where the sandals work with separate straps, the Tokio fully closes the forefoot. That makes it suitable year-round and explains why it stayed popular outside the summer.
