About BAPE Sk8 Sta
The sneaker from A Bathing Ape
The Sk8 Sta belongs to the STA family of A Bathing Ape (BAPE), the Japanese streetwear brand Nigo founded in 1993 in Tokyo’s Harajuku district. The original BAPE STA appeared in 2002 and immediately became an icon of Japanese street culture.
Unmistakable, and not without controversy
The shape strongly recalls the Nike Air Force 1 — a similarity that even led Nike to sue BAPE. Distinctive are the leather upper, the “STA” logo shaped like a falling star on the side panel, and the BAPE branding on the tongue and sole.
Cult status in hip hop
Through Nigo’s friends Pharrell Williams and Kanye West, the STA found its way into the hip-hop world early on, with sought-after releases like the “College Dropout” edition. The bright colors and patent leather made it a lasting cult favorite.
