Asics Skyhand

The Skyhand comes from a sport Asics rarely mentions: handball. The model appeared in the eighties as an indoor court shoe, with the low-profile construction and flat sole typical for that sport, and then disappeared from view for decades. The reissue in the SportStyle line brings it back as a street shoe, in materials that have nothing to do with the indoor game.

The design is sober and low. The upper is soft suede with a perforated panel on the toe, and the crossed brand stripes lie like stitched bands across the side, continuing into the sole rim. A double contrast foxing runs along the sole with the brand name printed into the gum rubber, and there is a small fabric heel loop. The sole is flat and thin, as an indoor shoe should be.

The collaboration with Danish furniture brand HAY put the model on the map with an audience that cares about colour and material rather than technology. That fits the positioning: this is the quiet, handcrafted side of Asics, far from the running models the brand owes its name to.
