About Air Jordan 15

Air Jordan 15

Tinker Hatfield designed this model after a rocket plane, and you can see it immediately. The Air Jordan 15 from 1999 tapers to a point, leans forward and looks more like something to be launched than something to play in.

The upper is woven, not cut

Where almost every Air Jordan is built from leather panels, this one consists of a woven surface. You can see the weave’s structure running the full length, like the covering of a fuselage. It makes the silhouette smoother and more seamless than its predecessors, and it’s the reason the 15 looks fast even when standing still.

That tongue is no mistake

The most talked-about detail quite literally sticks out: the tongue continues at the top and juts forward over the toe. That refers to Jordan’s habit of sticking his tongue out while playing. It’s the kind of design joke you hear explained once and then can never ignore.

Under the hood

The sole contains a carbon-fiber plate that keeps the shoe torsion-stiff, so all that length isn’t lost to twisting. At the midfoot there’s a triangular window with mesh, and the heel is sculpted around the Jumpman.

The model that nobody saw play

Here’s the honest part of the story. The 15 arrived in 1999, after Jordan retired for the second time. He never played a game in them for the Bulls, and partly because of that this is considered one of the least loved models in the series. Where the Air Jordan 14 marks a farewell and the Air Jordan 13 a title, the 15 marks an emptiness. A monster without a game to fight in.
