Football DNA on a sculpted sole
The adidas Sobakov appeared in 2018 as a lifestyle sneaker with clear football DNA. The upper borrows the knitted fit and leather three stripes of the football boot, but the eye-catcher is underfoot: a thick, sculpted midsole with a wavy ribbed pattern. The Sobakov therefore doesn’t stay low to the ground, but stands on a sturdy, sculptural sole.
The upper
The upper is a woven, lightly heathered textile that fits like a sock around the foot, with a leather heel counter for support. The three stripes lie as separate leather lanes over that knitted surface instead of being integrated into it, exactly like on the classic adidas football boot. That interplay of soft knitted material and smooth leather stripes gives the model its own identity.
The wavy midsole
That sole is the trademark. A high, solid midsole with a pronounced wave relief runs from heel to toe and lifts the shoe up. In the Sobakov Boost versions there is a Boost midsole under that relief for extra cushioning; the other versions share the same sculpted shape. In both cases it’s that wavy sole you immediately recognize.
Versions and collaborations
The Sobakov came in colors such as Triple Black, Cloud White with Aero Green, Clear Orange and a black version with a gum sole. The model also became a popular canvas for collaborations: a Bone version with Bodega, a 1982 World Cup edition with Sivasdescalzo and a dark version with the British artist Stormzy. Because of the limited runs, some of those are now harder to find.
