Adistar was at the start of this century adidas’s most expensive running name, and the shoe wanted to show it: where competitors printed their stripes, the Adistar mounted them as separate, chrome-plated bars on the upper. That line has returned as a retro, and the bling factor is the whole point. This is the most decked-out early-2000s runner in the reissue lineup, and it isn’t ashamed of it.
Stripes you can grab
Look at the three stripes: they’re not panels but mounted bars with a metallic sheen, each set separately on the mesh. Around them a web of thin rubber lines crosses the entire upper, like cords binding the shoe. And in the heel there’s a window showing the cushioning, with the name adiPRENE on it — the cushioning technology of that era, displayed here like a piece of jewelry.
Cushion and Control are the two variants
The models on this page come from two branches of the old line. The Adistar Cushion is the cushioned all-rounder; the Control 5 is the stability version with extra build-up along the inside. In the reissues that distinction is mostly visual: the Control looks heavier and more layered, the Cushion a bit sleeker. Both carry the chrome, the web and the heel window; if you recognise one of the two, you recognise them both.
The most baroque in the line-up
In the field of returned early-2000s runners the Adistar is the maximalist. The Supernova Cushion is the restrained brother from the same house, the Gel-Kayano 14 the lacquered rival, and the P-6000 the accessible entry in the genre. The Adistar outshines all three in gloss and weight — and that’s exactly why you either pick it or leave it.
