Adidas 4DFWD

The 4DFWD is the running shoe with a sole produced by a 3D printer. Adidas developed the technique together with the American company Carbon: instead of casting foam, a lattice structure is built up from liquid resin, layer by layer, allowing each part of the sole to have its own stiffness.

That lattice is immediately the model’s face. Under the foot is an open latticework of thousands of struts, visible from the side like a honeycomb, with the 4D marking formed in the side. The structure is designed so that on landing it doesn’t compress straight down but at an angle forward, which explains the name: forward. The upper is an airy knit panel with the three stripes across it.

It’s still technology with a price tag, and opinions about the running feel vary. What is certain is that it’s one of the few soles you can see completely through from the side, which makes the model instantly recognizable.

Within the range, the Adidas UltraBOOST is the counterpart with traditional foam, and the Adidas Adizero line is the brand’s speed-focused branch.
