Paul Van Doren and the classics of Vans
Paul Van Doren opened the first Vans store in Anaheim in 1966, where shoes were made to order and could be picked up the same afternoon. Nearly five thousand versions bear his name, almost all from the classic line that emerged from it. The classics share the same foundation: a vulcanized sole with the waffle tread that gave the brand its grip, and an upper of canvas or suede that is attached to that sole rather than glued on. That made the shoes suitable for skateboarding at the time, and explains why the shape has hardly changed since.
The four main branches are the Old Skool with the side stripe, the high-top Sk8-Hi, the laceless Slip-On and the simple Authentic. They mainly differ in height and closure; below you can filter by size, color and target audience.
