Puma Slipstream

The Slipstream is a basketball shoe from 1988 whose entire reputation is owed to the streets. Puma originally built it as a court shoe with an emphasis on cushioning and support, but the model was mostly picked up off the court, in the same years when hip hop shaped sneaker culture. For the reissue the brand therefore chose the street version of the story.

The construction is that of a classic basketball shoe. The upper stacks leather panels over each other with a perforated panel on the side, the leaping cat sits as a large design element across the side and a wide strap with the model name printed on it sits across the instep. On the heel rim the rubber shows the designation of the cushioning system, and the sole runs wide and flat, with a thick midsole that gives the shoe its robust stance.

The line includes a low and a high version, and the high one in particular shows where the model comes from: it reaches above the ankle with a padded collar, just like court shoes from that period were made.

Within the brand offering the Puma Suede and the Puma Palermo are the classics that serve the same retro taste from a different sport.
