Asics Gel-Kayano: one name, two lives

The Gel-Kayano has existed since 1993 and takes its name from Toshikazu Kayano, the Asics designer who devised it. A new generation has landed every year since, and the count now sits well past thirty. But there is something unusual on this page: the line is sold today in two completely different kinds of store.

On one side sit the current numbers, from the thirty-one and up. These are running shoes in the original sense: stability models for long distances, with heavy cushioning and support for anyone who rolls inward. You buy them to train.

On the other side sit the revived generations, most of all the Gel-Kayano 5 from 1999 and the Gel-Kayano 14. These came back not as sports shoes but as fashion shoes, and you can read it in the names beside them: KITH, atmos, Vivienne Westwood. Their pull sits in what they give away about their era, with layered panels and visible tech where a modern running shoe is smooth.

So the number tells you which world you are in. High and recent means running store, low and reissued means fashion store. What they share is the GEL cushioning in the heel and the focus on stability; what splits them is why people buy them.

Alongside those sit variants with a name of their own. Trainer and Lite-Show are derived versions, and the 5 360 wraps a sole unit all the way around. If you want to line the family up: the Gel-Nimbus is the neutral counterpart without the stability build, and the Gel-Lyte is the branch that always stood on the fashion side.
