Of the more than thirty generations the Kayano line comprises, this is the one that made the leap into the street scene. The 14 dates from 2008, the peak of the layered construction style, and was rediscovered just over ten years later by the very designers and shops that looked back to that era. The heel is a spectacle

Turn the shoe and look at the back of the sole: between sculpted fins the gel chambers lie exposed, like waves frozen in place. Where most models hide their gel or at most give it a little window, the 14 makes a show of it. It’s the detail that makes it recognizable from the side, even in the black-on-black of the darker colorways.

Lacquer, mesh and barcode

The upper stacks open mesh under glossy, lacquered overlays; the crossed straps on the side sit like mirrored ribbons over the mesh. A row of short dashes runs across the midpanel, like a Morse message, and the full name is written on the tongue. The carefully executed reissues in silver and off-white — identifiable by UB tags in the title — pushed that material mix furthest and became the face of the return.

What makes the 14 different from its neighbors

Next to the Gel-NYC, the 14 is the true archival piece: not a remix but an existing generation, brought back as it was. Compared with the GT-2160, its cheaper contemporary, it is more richly finished and more fully layered. And alongside the Gel-1130 it is the top-tier model that that mid-range shoe looked up to at the time. Within that quartet the 14 is the most detailed, and, apart from the silver versions, also the most in-demand.
