New Balance 574
The 574 originated in the late eighties as a compromise, and that’s not a criticism. It had to be sturdy enough for the road and grippy enough for unpaved sections, while staying simple enough not to become a specialist shoe. That’s exactly why it was never the best at anything, and exactly why it’s still around forty years later.
The compromise is written on the sole
Look at the side of the midsole, toward the heel. ENCAP is cast into the material there, and below it you can see what the name refers to: two different materials layered. A soft foam core for cushioning, contained within a harder rim that keeps the sole in place as the foot rolls. Two properties that normally conflict, here solved by physically separating them. That dividing line is visible on every pair.
The N is a panel
The letter on the side is not a print but a separately cut piece of material, stitched around its outline. It’s also not decorative: it runs from the sole edge up to the lacing and connects the two. At the back there’s a molded heel clip with horizontal ribs, and on the side a small woven label with the model number.
Three materials on one shoe
The upper mixes suede where it needs to absorb impacts, a smoother panel in the middle, and open mesh where it needs to breathe. That arrangement varies by version, but the logic remains: sturdy where it rubs, open where it gets warm. The toe is round and wide, with a rubber rim around it.
The letters before the number
In stores you’ll find the model as ML574, WL574, MS574 or U574. Those prefix letters indicate the version and the last, not a different model. If you seek more cushioning and a narrower, more technical construction, you’ll end up at the 990; the 530 and the 327 are lighter and flatter instead. The 550 comes from a completely different angle: it’s from the basketball court.
