About Puma Palermo

Puma Palermo

The Palermo bears its name on a slanted label next to the laces, and that small plate is immediately the identifier: no other model from the brand places its name on the midfoot like that. The shoe itself comes from the eighties, from the world of football stands and train trips to away matches, and it returned recently when precisely that stand style reclaimed the streets.

The answer to a German question

Anyone who places the Palermo next to the Handball Spezial sees two versions of the same idea: low, suede, gumsole, sporting origins. The differences are in the details. The Palermo wears its formstrip thick and rounded, like a thick slab on the side, whereas the German stripes are flat and serrated. And the gum sole literally carries the brand: PUMA is stamped in a frame on the sidewall of the rubber, visible on the outside. It’s the side the brand chooses when the competitor has the momentum — and it works.

Suede, nylon and a collar with piping

The upper combines suede on the toe and side with nylon panels in between, finished with a contrasting piping along the collar. The reissues come in two versions: the standard model sleek and clean, the Vintage versions with rougher, more brushed suede and muted colours as if the pair had lain for decades. The shape remains the same; the character shifts from neat to lived-in.

Within the house

The Palermo sits in the catalogue next to the Suede — the brand’s American basketball side — and thus forms the European counterpart: stands instead of the pitch, gum instead of cupsole. Comparing the lineup of low archive models, the Samba, the Spezial and the Palermo are the three main players of the same wave.
