You’re in a store. The box is in your hands, the price tag is staring back at you, and you have exactly three seconds to decide whether this is a great buy or an expensive impulse purchase. Until today, it was a guessing game. From now on, just point your camera at the barcode and you’ll know.
The Solezilla barcode scanner is live. One tap next to the search bar, camera open, point it at the sticker on the shoebox. We’ll take care of the rest.
How it works
There’s a new icon next to the search bar on your phone. Tap it and the camera opens. Keep the box’s barcode in view and the scanner reads it: EAN or UPC, both work. In a split second, you’ll be on the sneaker page linked to that code.
And here’s the part that really matters: your size is already selected. Not just the model in general, but the exact pair you’re holding, in the size printed on the box. This morning, I scanned a New Balance 9060 “Washed Blue” and landed on the page with “Size: EU 42,5” already selected, plus eight shops stocking that size, cheapest first.
What you’ll see
Everything you need to make those three seconds count. A price card showing every shop with your size in stock, from cheapest to most expensive. The retail price, so you know whether you’re above or below the mark. The price history, turning “good buy” into a number instead of a gut feeling. And the Hypescore in GSv, with the band underneath: is this pair sitting at INERT, or is it giving off ATOMIC energy?
It works just as well the other way around. Open your closet, grab a box, scan it, and see what people are asking for it today. That’s not an appraisal; it’s the market as it stands right now. Often, it’s more informative.
The engine behind it
A button like this is only useful if there’s data behind it. Right now, we have 852.051 scannable barcodes in the active listings. Of those, 842.726 point to exactly one sneaker — that’s 98.9 percent. And 792.796 also return exactly one size, or more than 93 percent. So in the vast majority of cases, there’s no doubt about which pair you’re holding.
If we don’t recognize a code, we’ll simply tell you. No wrong page, no guesswork. We also remember every code we miss, because an unfamiliar barcode isn’t a glitch — it’s a gap in our coverage. And we’re closing those gaps.
No camera handy?
The search bar has been upgraded too. Type or paste an EAN into the search field and you’ll be taken straight to the right sneaker, size and all. It works on any screen, including your desktop. The scan button itself is a phone feature, so it only appears on mobile, on both iPhone and Android.
Where this came from
Not from a boardroom. The idea came from a conversation at sneaker store TIKE in Ljubljana, where the problem was summed up in one sentence: you’re holding the box, and you still know nothing. We came back with that thought, and this is what came out of it. A separate story about that visit is coming soon, because sneaker shopping in Ljubljana deserves an episode of its own.
As far as we know, there’s no other sneaker search engine that does this. We felt that was a gap for long enough.
