Vans Era

The Era is the answer to a complaint. Skaters in the mid-seventies wore the Authentic, and it did everything well except one thing: the unpadded rim rubbed against the ankle. Two of them — the men who were inventing pool-edge skating — asked the factory for exactly one addition. So in 1976 the Authentic received a padded collar and a new name.

Look at the rim, that’s the whole difference

Place an Era next to an Authentic and look for the difference: it’s in the roll that runs around the top edge. On the Era the collar is padded and folded over with a contrasting lining, visible as a light rim that rolls over the darker upper. Everything else stayed the same — five pairs of eyelets, two canvas panels, the vulcanized sole with waffle tread and the thin foxing along the edge. It’s the smallest model change in the brand’s catalogue, and perhaps the most focused.

Why skaters felt the difference

A day on a board means a thousand small movements where the ankle rubs the shoe’s rim. The padding absorbs that, and the contrast stitching that runs around the Era reinforces the seams that give way first during skating. The Pro versions go further with suede on the toe and extra cushioning inside; the standard Era sticks to the collar and the stitching.

The place in the family

The line-up is now complete: the Authentic is the bare original, the Era the padded improvement, the Old Skool adds suede and the side stripe, and the SK8-Hi pulls all of that up over the ankle. If you’re choosing between the Authentic and the Era, ask yourself one question: will you wear it for hours on end? If so, the collar wins.
