Puma Deviate Nitro 3

The Deviate Nitro is the shoe with which Puma re-entered the running world, and the third generation is the model with which it did so convincingly. The brand had for decades been mainly about track and street; with this line it targets the road runner who wants to pick up the pace without immediately stepping into a race shoe.

The sole combines two things that rarely go together. There is a carbon plate in it, which makes the push-off stiffer and more efficient, but around it sits so much springy foam that the shoe remains comfortable on easy miles. The name of that foam is printed in block letters on the sole’s edge, and the midsole flares out toward the heel for stability. The upper is an airy woven panel with the leaping cat as a large design element on the side.

That places the model in the rare category of race-style shoes you can just keep wearing. Where true race models are done after a few hundred kilometers, this is a trainer that incorporates the plate instead of building around it.
