Nike Slides

The Nike slides range has revolved for almost thirty years around one silhouette: the Benassi, the shower slide that conquered locker rooms in the mid‑’90s and has since been the uniform of athletes heading to the shower. The formula has remained unchanged: a wide strap with the vertical NIKE wordmark on it, and a footbed covered in massage nubs that feels more pleasant after training than many insoles.

The Nike Benassi has over the years been joined by versions of itself: the JDI variant bears the Just Do It slogan, there was a Lux version with richer materials, and in its wildest form the strap included a complete zippered hip pouch — the Fanny Pack edition with which Nike was openly not taking itself seriously. Stüssy also reworked the model and put its signature logo on a nubuck strap, which definitively turned the shower slide into streetwear.

Meanwhile a new generation stands alongside it. The Nike Victori One is the direct successor with a firmer footbed, the Nike Offcourt stacks thicker foam for after the game, and the Nike Calm takes a different approach: molded in one piece, seamless and minimal, as a counterpoint to busy sports logos. For the littlest there is the Kawa, with soft straps in toddler and baby sizes.

That way one product group serves two worlds at once. The athlete who needs something between the locker room and the car, and the collector who places the Stüssy edition next to their sneakers. Both groups look at the same simple form; the difference lies in the details on the strap.
