Nike Flyknit

Flyknit is not a model but a manufacturing method, and that explains why such a wide range of shoes appears under this name. Nike introduced the technique in 2012: instead of cutting the upper from separate pieces of fabric and sewing them together, it is knitted in one piece from yarn. Firmer where support is needed, more open where ventilation is needed, and without the seams that normally create pressure points.

The reason was as practical as it was environmentally conscious. Cutting traditional uppers leaves a lot of leftover material; by knitting directly to shape most of that waste is eliminated. The first model was a marathon racing shoe, after which the technique quickly filtered into basketball, football and lifestyle.

You recognize it by the texture. The upper fits like a sock around the foot, with visible bands in the knit that transition from tight to open, often with integrated cables along the eyelets that secure the foot. Colors and patterns are woven into the yarn itself rather than printed onto the material.

Within the range, the Nike Flyknit Racer and the Nike Flyknit Trainer are the models it started with, while the Nike Free Flyknit applied the technique to the flexible Free sole. The Nike Air VaporMax also relies entirely on a knitted upper.
