Nike Air Max 180: the first air unit to touch the ground
All previous Air Max models had their air unit wrapped in foam, with a layer of rubber between the air and the asphalt. The Air Max 180 removed that layer. Look at the heel and you see the transparent unit protruding underneath: here the wearer stands directly on the air. Hence the number. The unit is visible over 180 degrees, from the side and from below.
That required a different construction. Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore built the unit into an arch that runs around the entire heel using blow molds, a shape they borrowed from the horseshoe. Kilgore had earlier designed the Air Force 1, the shoe that put Nike Air under a basketball sole for the first time. Here he did the opposite: not hide it, but expose it.
Over the unit lies a ribbed cap that falls over the heel like a series of fingers, and underneath three round support points remain visible. The year was 1991, four years after the first Air Max 1 and one year after the Air Max 90. Where those two show the air as a window, the 180 turns it into a support surface.
Mind the spelling when searching. Nike released the model at the time as Air 180, without Max, and both names have been in circulation since. On this page they appear mixed. The Comme des Garçons version also shows up here, which indicates how the model is worn nowadays.
The direct heir is on the next page. The Air Max 200 was released in 2019 as a tribute to the 180 and uses the same continuous design, but with more volume. If you prefer a window in the side rather than a unit under the foot, look at the Air Max 95.
On this page you can see which versions of the Nike Air Max 180 are currently the hottest according to the Hypescore, from which price they can be found and at how many shops they are in stock.
