Nike Air Liquid Max: a sole inspired by a frog

Every year on Air Max Day Nike takes a new step in the technology the whole family is named for, and on March 26, 2026 this was the answer. The Air Liquid Max carries no chamber and no window but a row of separate pods under the foot, in various sizes, that together look like droplets strung together. Hence the word Liquid in the name.

That shape wasn’t made up out of thin air. Nike looked at frogs’ toe pads, where soft little spheres absorb pressure precisely at the points that touch the ground. In the same way the pods here sit only where your weight lands, with a separate Cushlon midsole above that lets you sink into the shoe. Cushioning on demand, then, instead of a continuous layer under your entire foot.

The upper completes the picture and is based on the same animal. Nike uses a three-layer printing technique that blends colors into one another, taking the poison dart frog as its starting point. You can see that in the fine dotted grid that fans out across the flank, dense near the toe and thinning toward the heel. The debut colorway is therefore called Poison Dart Frog. The shoe, by the way, first met an audience not in a store but in a music video by rapper Yeat, before Nike officially announced it.

In the Air Max family this is for now the endpoint of a long line. The VaporMax removed the midsole and let you walk on separate chambers, the Air Max Dn added tubes with varying pressure, and the Liquid Max splits the cushioning into separate pods that only do what’s necessary. Each step removes material and lets air do more of the work.
